Catherine at WordCamp Jacksonville

In Honour of Catherine Mayokun Egwali – Kids/Teen Camp tickets Are Free

I first met Catherine physically in 2016. I had e-meet her in 2015 on a Facebook group (HeadStart Africa, formerly SmartBCamp) i was part of and we engaged with each other sometimes. She was one of the few people who reached out to me to contribute to the Lagos WordPress Community when we began to have frequent meetups. Despite having her business and family to run, she volunteered her time to teach, her resources (free hosting and others) to members at meetups anytime she could.

Subsequently, she would make herself available for the community and also assisted when we started the Women Who WordPress meetups too. She was active on the WordPress Nigeria Slack group. She helped run the social media campaign last year for WCLAGOS18. Catherine is loved by all and she will be missed. She is a passionate human, well talented and great at her job and cared deeply for the WordPress community.

I was not surprised when she volunteered to teach again at the first WordCamp Lagos event we had last year. She not only taught, she also sponsored the event. Matter of fact, she was planning to be a huge part of the event this year as well and we spoke few days before she passed.

Catherine has gone home to rest, on behalf of all us in the Nigerian WordPress Community and Jacksonville WordPress Community where she participated in their WordCamp, we pray the good God give her family the strength needed to bear her passing. And we pray the Children she left behind receive healing from this pain always.

Few words from Community Members

Catherine was energetic, always full of life. She juggled a lot but one could easily not see that. She always had time to help community members in need despite also managing her family. She was and will always be a superhero to me. Rest in peace Kate, see you in the after-life. – Mary Job

My family and I had the pleasure of showing Catherine around Jacksonville and joining her at WordCamp Jacksonville. She and I had a chance to connect and become friends. We kept in touch even after she returned home. She will be missed. My prayers go out to her family. – Aida Marie Correa

May her gentle soul rest in peace. – Abiodun Ayorinde

I don’t know her but I always appreciate any woman in technology, May her soul RIP. – Owopetu Abiola

Dynamite, ever ready to help out, very behind-the-scenes but always there to support you, a quiet superhero with that reassuring smile. I pray that her kids know what a great woman she was, so sad. – Adedayo Adeniyi

It is well with those she left behind. She must have found a better place than here. Rest in peace C…” – Adebayo Ogunleye.
